Day in the Life Videos for Legal Settlements / Mediation and Jury Trials
Since day in the life video documentaries are often used in court, the specifications for videotaping differ from that of a settlement video.  Assuming that a day in the life video would be videotaped at a house, in patient or outpatient therapy session or hospital there is typically no voice over. Background noise is acceptable most of the time, unless conversations can be heard.  Second of all, the videographer does not need to zoom very much.  It is important to keep the video shots to tight, medium and wide shots with cuts and dissolves in between.  The purpose of videotaping a day in the life of an injured party is simply to show what a typical day is like for the injured party.  The video needs to run in chronological order of hourly events and the video should not influence what is happening in the shot.  We have seen footage unable to be admitted when good attorneys object to camera techniques.  Typically, a day in the life video is strictly a documentary video.

Day in the Life Video Example
Our day in the life video example starts with a paraplegic or quadriplegic that was injured in an auto or truck accident. In the early stages of recovery, the client used to work, but now stays home and concentrates on doing daily activities and rehabilitation. more

Day in the Life Video Example

The first thing that we would do is contact the client and explain to them our process and insure them that we are there to make the taping go as comfortable as possible and that we are going to be very easy and friendly to work with. This initial "day in the life video consultation" helps a family or client feel more comfortable about a stranger or legal videographer documenting them in a time of pain, suffering and humiliation, which can make for difficult videotaping. After a short telephone interview regarding daily activities, a date is chosen for the day in the life videotaping. An experienced legal videographer will show up at location and spend time documenting difficult daily activities including eating, sleeping, bathing or showering, urinating and bowel movement stimulation, diaper changing, dressing, brushing teeth, family members and heath care providers providing assistance, trips made in vehicles and any other difficult daily activities.

Once the video has been taped, a legal video editor will edit the vide down using cuts and dissolves. Depending on a particular activity and injury, an average day in the life video could be anywhere from fifteen to forty minutes. If it is too short, then a day in the life could appear too easy compared to actual pain and suffering, but if it is too long, then an audience or jury might get tired or bored or have a time limit . . . which is why we advise using an experienced legal video firm to produce an effective day in the life video documentary.
